This course looks at the ways historical films engage the American past. As 
it looks at the relationship between cinematic and academic history, it will 
focus on two pivotal, even mythic moments in the American past: Westward 
Expansion and Immigration. We will discuss the ways these iconic historical 
events are part of the American historical consciousness as well as reflect 
the ideals embodied in the American Dream.
