Carolyn Merchant “Autonomous Nature: Resistance versus Control”
Monday, April 3 at 6:00pm in Richard F. Celeste Theatre

“Autonomous Nature” depicts the history of nature as rebellious,
recalcitrant, rambunctious, and unruly. Despite the dramatic achievements of
Western science, the limits of nature’s predictability are still manifested
today in the effects of natural disasters, extreme weather, and climate
change.

Carolyn Merchant is Professor of Environmental History, Philosophy, and
Ethics at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of The
Death of Nature; Ecological Revolutions; and Reinventing Eden among other
books.
