Celeste Theatre “Autonomous Nature” depicts the history of nature as rebellious, recalcitrant, rambunctious, and unruly. Despite the dramatic achievements of Western science, the limits of nature’s predictability are still manifested today in the effects of natural disasters, extreme weather, and climate change. Carolyn Merchant is Professor of Environmental History, Philosophy, and Ethics at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of The Death of Nature; Ecological Revolutions; and Reinventing Eden among other books.
