Cultural memory and identity are constructed through narratives, the overlapping of history and myth. Whether spoken, written, filmed, or compressed into a building or sculpture, these narratives maintain and conserve culture, as well as open up possibilities for "counternarratives" and cultural innovation. In this course, on site in Greece, the home of some of the most fabled ancient myths and monuments in world history, students will explore the intersections of myths, monumental structures, and movies, perhaps the most effective mythmaking medium of modernity.
