Dear colleagues,

Christina Rader and I have been planning an informal get together for chairs and directors, with drinks and appetizers, for this Friday, 4-5:30pm. We posted the invitation on the Teams channel today around 1pm. We were going to also announce it at the meeting today, as well, but Emily announced another event at her home that evening. We chatted with Emily after the meeting and we and her are both fine with both events happening. So, more opportunities for conversation!

I see in the Digest that we are now going to have to do quarterly reviews of our staff, which I understand many staff do NOT want. Even more, I’m not sure what the value added would be for the time it would take. I haven’t seen the format, so maybe it will be helpful, but I have my doubts. What happens in three months that would warrant such a review for an Admin Asst, for example? Is this something we can discuss at the next Chairs meeting? Or maybe this is NOT for all staff? It just comes

Thanks to your very thoughtful work on the course grids, when I merged all of your draft grids the course schedule looked nicely balanced. Kudos to all of you for this shared effort!!! Please move forward with building your courses in Banner, guided by the blocks/visitor positions that were approved in a previous email. This process opens today and closes on March 8. Christine Brett will be in touch shortly with additional instructions.

We would love to celebrate the hard work of staff and faculty this semester with the joint event hosted by the President’s office, FEC, and staff council. The campus wide party is 2-5 this Friday, Cornerstone.

If you can close your department during this time, please consider doing so.
We know that some will not be able to close (might have lab, studio, study sessions, searches).

I'm writing to share the template, attached, for your department's/program's course grids. The template is the same as last year and allows us to merge all of your grids to create a balanced course schedule that meets students' needs. This format helps us to determine how many seats there are available in classes that fulfill General Education requirements and ensure that we offer sufficiently many first-year friendly classes to set our incoming students up for success. 1. To search for a candidate to propose as a Riley Pre-doc/Post-doc Fellow.

2. To search for potential candidates to share hiring information for upcoming faculty positions (not Riley). The CFD database can search fellow records of the most recent three years.

While we were assembling the agenda for our Monday meeting (5/8), the final date/time of the CC panel on the upcoming SCOTUS and affirmative action was confirmed, and it is exactly at the same time as chairs meeting.

It is an important panel for us all, in our college leadership roles as chairs and directors, to attend this panel discussion. The SCOTUS decision could have broad ramifications for us as faculty. Happy end of block 7 everyone,

I’m following up from David’s earlier email to you all about difficulties in hiring paraprofessionals, and we are in a predicament this year as it turns out. Thanks Gail for your thoughts back in March about paraprofessionals and the timing and how things have changed post-Covid. Of course the pay IS meagre, and that is especially apparent to (re salary) for students graduating in computer science. Thanks Tricia also for your comments. I hope the Psych department had hiring success this year.

The first of two Leadership Workshops with Academic Impressions this spring is coming up on March 15. This session will explore strategies to create an environment to support healthy conflict and constructively resolve personnel issues. Participants will be asked to complete the Kraybill assessment, a tool that identifies preferred approaches to resolving conflict. Through the results of the Kraybill assessment and additional resources, participants will gain strategies to effectively navigate difficult situations in the workplace.

One of the campus-wide initiatives to support mental health awareness and suicide prevention is to make available the QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) training to all staff and faculty.

Thank you for a helpful meeting yesterday, and the input you shared in person and by email before and after the meeting. One suggestion we heard from many of you was the importance of creating spaces for student community in addition to the chaplain's office programming space or a wellness-mental-health office space. I carried our ideas and comments to Cabinet meeting on Tuesday (one of many cabinet meetings where we will continue to review and discuss mental health, death, and other emergencies). Folks found faculty input and your observations from working with students very helpful.

This is the call for applications that I mentioned in the chair's meeting. It's a call for applications from departments and programs interested in hiring for a tenure-track or lecturer position in AY 2022-23, with a Fall 2023 start date.

This memo pertains to budget increase requests for FY23. The Office of the Dean of the Faculty invites departments and programs to submit requests for funds. We do not anticipate significant new resources for next year. However, we do want to try to meet pressing needs, and we invite departments with these needs to submit a prioritized proposal for one-time increases or permanent increases in their FY23 operating budgets.

Yes, great – looking forward to learning the status of Visitor request for 22-23, thank you for this update.
In our Dept, we do not have any courses now in J block, although research students and some who are taking a ½ block are returning. Next block, for Igneous Petrology, new fac Michelle Gevedon is preparing by recording mini-lectures for asynchronous use, and setting up for a flipped classroom. This is Michelle’s first single-taught “stand up” course, so it is a good deal of work for her. Thankfully for next block she does have a well-qualified paraprof.

You will have now received from the all-fac email list a message about contingency planning for the anticipated Omicron surge.

It might end up being a sharper increase in cases, or it might be a muted crest --- time will tell. I want to encourage faculty and their directors/chairs to have some conversations to confirm contingency plans. We especially want to ensure that faculty with personal concerns, caregiving responsibilities, as well as faculty newer to CC (block visitors, year-long visitors, new tenure track faculty) have the support and information that they need.

Many of you have been wondering about plans for Boettcher. Here is what is happening according to the Master Plan:
“According to the masterplan Boettcher is scheduled to be demo’d so that we can extend the campus pedestrian walk and allow the space for an addition and remodel to Loomis.”
I have recommended to President Song and the FEC that the two committees (Design and Master Plan) that used to oversee/provide input on campus space issues be revived in some form to allow for more timely and strategic planning about space in a centralized way.

I have updated the draft that was presented at a faculty meeting in 2019-20 in light of questions and concerns that were raised at that meeting. Good morning - per the new CC Visitor Policy<https://mailchi.mp/coloradocollege.edu/new-public-events-policy-959528?e=0fc2174eab> posted yesterday, the Deans Office no longer requires visitors to fill out our Qualtrics form and have visitors sign-in with us prior to interacting with the Colorado College community. Host departments should keep logs of when official visitors are onsite and maintain their contact information to aid with contact training efforts. In the past, these visits took place during blockly department meetings, often for 30 minutes (but can vary based on departmental need or preference). I have heard that there is some confusion about class formats for this academic year. This note is a reminder that ALL teaching should be done in person unless you have a medical exemption approved by Human Resources or a non-medical exemption approved by my office. I check Qualtrics for submissions every other week on average, but if I receive a heads-up from a faculty member that a submission has been made, I send that request to Claire as soon as possible.

The Office of the Dean of the Faculty requests your feedback on Chairs and Directors Meeting dates in AY 2021-22. The two options for Chairs and Directors meetings are the second Monday of the Block, or the third Monday of the Block. The meeting will still be held from 3:30 - 5:15 PM in the Yalich Board Room (pending space availability).

Good afternoon - I'm preparing the Key Dates memo for the 2021-22 academic year and would love any feedback you have on this document. Dear colleagues:
Unfortunately, we will not be able to award extraordinary merit this year. We do not have a funding source. This means that both department/program alphabetical cohorts will have gone a cycle without extraordinary merit.

I will be working with our incoming president and Mateo Muñoz on establishing a sustainable funding source so that we may re-establish extraordinary merit awards next year. Over the course of the year I’ll have conversations with you all and the FEC about how to reinstitute it in a way that is equitable and fair to the departments and programs and the pre-tenure people
