Dear all,

I understand that some parts of the following message and/or attachment
did not come through accurately in some (all?) cases. So here it is again
with the material in the attachment included below:

If you're in the final stages of work on a book-length manuscript, you
might find these new manuscript seminars useful. Supported by the Hulbert
Center, they are open to faculty across divisions. There will be up to
three this year and three next year, in the pilot phase. The deadline
for applications is October 1, 2008.

Thanks to Anne Hyde for developing the idea and to the Hulbert Center
endowment for funding it.

Susan

Re: Call for Applications: Hulbert Manuscript Seminars

As one of several initiatives to assist faculty in becoming stronger
scholars, we would like to announce a program of focused seminars designed
to benefit faculty in the midst of rethinking and redrafting book-length
manuscripts. This two-year pilot program would be open to faculty at any
level and in any field, but would be generally limited to faculty working
on book-length scholarly monographs in their fields of study. As a way to
test interest and need, we will organize and host three of these seminars
in 2008-2009, seminars to be held between 10/2008 and 9/2009, and three in
2009-2010, seminars to be held between 10/2009 and 9/2010.

Modeled after programs in research libraries, the seminar participants
would identify two or three scholars in the field, and perhaps an editor
from a scholarly press, who could read and comment usefully on a full
draft of a manuscript, and be willing to participate in a seminar here at
Colorado College. We would arrange for and pay for transportation,
lodging, food, and an honorarium for each of the seminar participants, not
to exceed a total cost of $6000. Having read the manuscript, they would
gather at Colorado College for a two-day seminar to work on the draft in a
cooperative setting, giving the author focused advice for producing an
excellent book. The format, timing, and people invited for these sessions
could vary widely, depending on the needs of the participants.

The Hulbert Center and its Director serves as the major organizer, funder,
and host of these seminars, but the Director of Faculty Research Support
will also be an active participant. The Hulbert Scholars will be chosen by
a larger committee, including faculty from outside the College and the
Dean.

Application Details:

materials to Anne Hyde, Oct. 1, 2008. The selection committee will meet
very quickly to choose this year's scholars.

during non-teaching blocks, half-block, summer)

                                    c. suggestions for possible
seminar participants from off-campus

                                    d. a plan for redrafting and
