Colleagues,

Here's a message from the Associated Colleges of the Midwest. Please let
Jeff Noblett know if you're interested in participating.

Susan

As a pilot initiative, ACM is inviting your faculty to apply for
partial funding to participate in the CIEE International Faculty
Development Seminar that will visit the site of the ACM's new program
in Botswana this June 15-24, 2008. The deadline is at noon, two weeks
from today on Friday, February 22. I request your help in making your
faculty aware of this opportunity.

In this initiative, the CIEE will extend the $200 discount that it
offer to its members to all ACM colleges for this Seminar, reducing
its fee from $2800 to $2600. Besides the fee, CIEE recommends that
participants budget another $2200 to cover international travel,
dinners, snacks, etc, for a total budget of $4800. The 10-day program
is described at http://ciee.org/IFDS.aspx

For its part, the ACM will offer a $2400 stipend to cover half the
costs of participating, to fund the top five proposals from ACM
faculty who show how they would use the Seminar to develop curricula
in a course that would help students who are going to, or returning
from, Botswana.

It is NOT necessary that applicants be Africanists or that the course
be focused on Africa. We anticipate funding successful proposals in
the arts, humanities, sciences or social sciences. ACM programs aim
to support curricular goals on ACM campuses and this initiative aims
to strengthen the connection between on- and off-campus studies across
a range of fields. Faculty who are interested to direct the ACM
program in a future year may be especially interested in this
opportunity.

To apply, ACM faculty should submit:

a) a letter describing how this trip would be used to add significant
material on Botswana to a new or existing course, and how it would be
used to help students who are going to, or returning from Botswana to
connect their studies off-campus to their on-campus academic work;
b) this letter should also explain how the remaining cost for the trip
would be covered, whether from personal or institutional funds;
c) a copy of the relevant syllabus for an existing or future course;
d) a CV;
e) a letter of support from the Dean.

Applications must be submitted by email to [log in to unmask] by NOON on
Friday, February 22, 2008.

Proposals will be reviewed by a committee that includes a Dean or
Associate Dean, an ACM Director of Off-Campus Study, and a senior
member of the ACM program staff.

CIEE explained that it reserves the right not to run the seminar if
there are fewer than five participants from the ACM.

This initiative grew from a suggestion this week from Betsy Brewer at
Beloit and feedback from several of you. I am grateful for the help
each of you gave in identifying an opportunity and helping us to act
on it quickly.

I realize that the time is short and hope nonetheless that your
faculty will be able to benefit from this opportunity. If you have
any questions, please let me know.

Chris
