Dr. Schwarz's research is among the most cited in the field of social psychology and he will be talking about how our popular theories on happiness are wrong (e.g., materialism, success), and how it is often the little things that count.

Intuitions about the happy life and the failure to learn from experience

April 2 (Week 2 Wednesday) 7:00 - 8:30 PM

Gates Common Room, Palmer Hall

Colorado College

People have strong intuitions about the conditions of a happy life and the activities they enjoy. They assume, for example, that happiness increases with income and decreases with age, that spending time with their children is the most enjoyable activity of the day, and that driving a luxury car feels better than driving an economy car. Yet episodic assessments of their actual affective experiences in the respective situations paint a very different picture. I show how predictions and global memories diverge from actual experience, conceptualize the underlying processes, and discuss their implications for social science methodology and decision making in daily life.
