Dear colleagues,
As a result of conversations with the members of this year's and last
year's Research and Development Boards, the divisional committees, and the
FEC, I'd like to initiate a set of competitive grants for faculty members
ready to begin new scholarly projects or revive old ones. People who have
not received internal or external support for scholarship in the last
three years would be eligible. This program would not reduce the funds
available through divisional research grants but would provide an
alternative source of support for some faculty.
Opportunity Grants for Faculty
Rationale: In an effort to expand support for scholarship and professional
development,, the Dean's Office offers resources (up to $4000) to faculty
members interested in exploring new interests or in reviving projects
postponed due to heavy college and departmental commitments. This fund
supports a variety of initiatives, including per diem supplements to the
standard college conference travel grants, even if not presenting at the
conference or professional meeting, books for reading programs, field
work, preparation for collaborative research initiatives, visits to
laboratories and libraries and other travel to support preliminary or
renewed investigations. The grants do not cover release time or stipends.
Guidelines for submission of proposals:
1. Please submit proposals to Susan Ashley by May 1, 2006. Provide the
original and three copies if submitting a hard-copy application.
Applications may also be submitted electronically to

2. Applicants must be full-time or adjunct members of the faculty who have
not received outside or college funding for research (divisional funds,
development blocks, MacArthur awards, mini-sabbaticals) in the last three
years.
3. Each application will be judged on its own merits.
4. Applications should include the following information, in this order:

b. Current date.
c. Description of the project.
d. An explanation of how the grant would contribute to the applicant's
scholarly development.

college) received in the last five years with the dates, purposes, and
amounts.
f. The budget .
5. Reports. The recipient must provide an account (and accounting) of the
activities supported by the grant and an assessment of their results.
