Re: Glenn Gray and Liberal Education Seminars - starting Tues., 9 October
Invitation! All faculty are invited to participate in the first of three
faculty-student seminars reflecting on the character of liberal education,
using the late J. Glenn Gray's seminal pedagogical work, The Promise of
Wisdom: A Philosophical Theory of Education (1968). Gray, a longtime
member of the Philosophy Department who died 30 years ago, was one of the
most influential members of the CC faculty, known both for his remarkable
study of ethics and war, The Warriors (1957 - and still in print!), and
for presenting the first English translations of works by the German
existential philosopher, Martin Heidegger. As a leader among the faculty
at the College, Gray's approach to pedagogy had - and may well still have
- a strong influence on how teaching and learning have been conducted at
Colorado College. Generations of College alumni report that classes and
discussions with Glenn Gray changed their lives.
Learn about and question a CC tradition. We would like to encourage
colleagues from across the disciplines and divisions to take this
opportunity to reflect on liberal learning at the College. We ask that
colleagues also invite up to five students to join them in these
discussions.
On Tuesday, 9 October, 3:30-5, in Bemis Great Hall, we plan the first
afternoon of reflection, discussion, and debate on liberal learning, using
the introduction and first part of Gray's book, The Promise of Wisdom as a
springboard. Sherry Gray Martin of St. John's College, daughter of Glenn
Gray, will join us to co-moderate our discussions. We will meet first in
small groups of up to 16, and come together for a plenary discussion.
Please RSVP. Interested faculty members should RSVP to Jonathan
Lee (x 6860 or mailto:[log in to unmask] Additional information on
this and subsequent events follows. For a pdf copy of the reading, visit:
