Dear chairs and directors,

Thank you for a helpful meeting yesterday, and the input you shared in person and by email before and after the meeting. One suggestion we heard from many of you was the importance of creating spaces for student community in addition to the chaplain's office programming space or a wellness-mental-health office space. I carried our ideas and comments to Cabinet meeting on Tuesday (one of many cabinet meetings where we will continue to review and discuss mental health, death, and other emergencies). Folks found faculty input and your observations from working with students very helpful.

Informed by the discussions, President Song heard the need to create such communal spaces for students, not just for future needs, but also for the current moment. She sent out this invitation this morning to all students, and also shared it with students' parents and families. I am sharing this with you too so that you are aware, and could encourage students who you know who would like to be a part of these spaces to gather if they wish. Feel free to share this with the staff and faculty colleagues in your department.

I'll be sending a summary of our chairs meeting later when I am done with summarizing my notes. But i didn't want to wait for that to send this out to you.
warmly,
Emily

Subject: Sitting in Community with You

This message from the president was shared with students earlier today.

Dear CC Parents and Families,

The below message from President L. Song Richardson was shared with students today. We are sharing it with you, too, so that you are aware of this opportunity for reflection and community for your student on campus. We are committed to caring for one another in difficult times, and we are grateful for the many ways you support your student.

Dear Students,

Like many of you, I have been processing the tragic losses our community has experienced over the last few months. Nothing about this is easy. Each of us will feel different emotions, and respond and cope in our own unique ways. At times like these, it is often difficult to know what to do or what to say. We can only do our best.

I’m writing to you today because I feel a strong desire to sit in community during this difficult time with anyone who would like to join me. We can sit together in silence or talk about whatever is on your mind.

There is no agenda and no pressure to join me. However, if you would like to, I will be at Worner Campus Center tomorrow, Oct. 6, from 12-2 p.m. and from 4-6 p.m. in the lobby lounge by the piano. Feel free to stop by at any time, for however long you like.

As I said at the beginning of this year, I am at CC because of you. I hope to spend time with anyone who would like to stop by on Thursday.

Take good care,

L. Song Richardson
President
