Hello Chairs and Directors,

As promised at our meeting last week, here are some updates and information I share with you wearing my Crown Center hat. Some of this was in the email I sent week 1 of the current block<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ft.e2ma.net%2Fmessage%2F3n9rvh%2Fb6slobi&data=05%7C02%7CCHAIRSANDDIRECTORS%40listserv1.coloradocollege.edu%7C0eb039f78bf148cd625008dc59a6eab3%7Ccfc7b13c12964387b3085de08fd13c99%7C0%7C0%7C638483822487323832%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=fbWzno5o9YAUKEmWbaSyXQK62Kuf7KB8lXv28ycxcqA%3D&reserved=0>. But lots of other stuff too…

Please consider and let your colleagues know about the following:

Crown Educator Development Day: Building into the Future

May 17th (Friday after block 8): 9am-4:30pm

This day-long gathering is open to all faculty and staff with a desire to engage the ways we prepare our students to enter the lives, careers, and communities they will engage after college. Through presentations, discussions, and workshops, we will not only explore practices of reflection and assessment alongside world readiness, but also how we might authentically connect such preparation to curricular elements. Our guest will be Ashley Finley<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ft.e2ma.net%2Fclick%2F3n9rvh%2Fb6slobi%2Fv987hp&data=05%7C02%7CCHAIRSANDDIRECTORS%40listserv1.coloradocollege.edu%7C0eb039f78bf148cd625008dc59a6eab3%7Ccfc7b13c12964387b3085de08fd13c99%7C0%7C0%7C638483822487323832%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=jeieVF3wIVglr2G3nj1Ls58DQPnuqisWGnIkCnXalbE%3D&reserved=0> (Vice President for Research and Senior Advisor to the President of AAC&U). See attached and below a call for applications to a special Faculty Development Program hosted by the Deliberate Citizenship Initiative<mailto:https://deliberativecitizenship.org/> at Davidson College. This is a community of faculty members dedicated to learning about and utilizing innovative approaches that foster productive deliberation in their courses, with the goal of encouraging students to engage with one another on contentious topics. Note that review of applications begins 4/22.

Participate in the Instructional Coaching Program<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.coloradocollege.edu%2Fother%2Fcrown-center%2Fprograms%2Finstructional-coaching.html&data=05%7C02%7CCHAIRSANDDIRECTORS%40listserv1.coloradocollege.edu%7C0eb039f78bf148cd625008dc59a6eab3%7Ccfc7b13c12964387b3085de08fd13c99%7C0%7C0%7C638483822487323832%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=fCzE3XKEteI%2FyH6Uzro2agELSqNc5UeA5YpOti2I6Og%3D&reserved=0>

The Instructional Coaching Program was founded in 2021 to support CC educators’ anti-oppressive pedagogical development. Our Lead Instructional Coaches are Professors Tina Valtierra and Santiago Guerra. Each year we have about dozen coach/coachee pairs. The coaches serve as pedagogical thought partners, observing and supporting the development of one coachee colleague throughout an academic year, typically in four coaching cycles. The program is not based on seniority and anyone can serve as a coach or coachee. Additionally, in an effort to increase our offerings, we may have the opportunity to provide department/program coaching during the 2024-2025 school year. Please be in touch with any questions about individual and/or departmental coaching.

Mentoring Alliance Program<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.coloradocollege.edu%2Fother%2Fcrown-center%2Fprograms%2Fmap.html&data=05%7C02%7CCHAIRSANDDIRECTORS%40listserv1.coloradocollege.edu%7C0eb039f78bf148cd625008dc59a6eab3%7Ccfc7b13c12964387b3085de08fd13c99%7C0%7C0%7C638483822487323832%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=X1Ea%2BkfiU%2BOy9F6s1fmfFEGdOkCL6Lnc6N5LLtQ%2BECg%3D&reserved=0> (MAP)

Now that our MAP cohorts are organized by year (first-year faculty, second-year, etc.), we’re adding scaffolded topic integration to the MAP meetings. These topics will expand and supplement the already robust “grab bag” of topics initially assembled for the program. These topics cover a range of professional and educational development topics. If there are areas you think our newer colleagues would particularly benefit from, please reach out with any and all ideas! Additionally, if you are interested in becoming a mentor, please email MAP program director Scott Krzych<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

BYOB Blocks (Spring 2025)

Our expansion of the “Build Your Own Block” (BYOB) program supports Project 2024’s goal to “Reinforce Liberal Learning” through interdisciplinary inquiry and expanding two-block options for our students. It expands a model used by the psychology department for the past decade, into a program accessible to students across the college. For more information and a list of next year’s opportunities please see this document<mailto:Our%20expansion%20of%20the%20“Build%20Your%20Own%20Block”%20(BYOB)%20program%20supports%20Project%202024’s%20goal%20to%20“Reinforce%20Liberal%20Learning”%20through%20interdisciplinary%20inquiry%20and%20expanding%20two-block%20options%20for%20our%20students.%20It%20expands%20a%20model%20used%20by%20the%20psychology%20departmen?subject=https://cctigers.sharepoint.com/:w:/s/CrownCenter-Director/ESB7bNN_sw5Fl_2SQcPbF7EBdJ6txm_IVko0qdthss1HxA?e=NaxtTc>.

New Faculty Orientation (Fall 2024)

The dates are August 19 & 20 and planning is underway. Two requests:

  1. Do you or one of your colleagues have a classroom activity or approach that you'd like to share and workshop with our new colleagues? I’m seeking participants for our “Active Learning & Inclusive Pedagogies on The Block Plan” session. Be in touch with ideas.

  2. Are there things our newest colleagues might benefit from knowing that you aren’t sure we cover?

THANK YOU!!!! And be in touch about anything, whenever. 😊

Sincerely,

Ryan

Dear Centers for Teaching and Learning Directors at AALAC Institutions,

The Deliberative Citizenship Initiative (DCI) at Davidson College is inviting applications to the fourth cohort of its innovative deliberative pedagogy program, the DeeP Collaborative. Program participants workshop new or existing courses that will increase their students’ abilities to engage in deliberation about difficult problems individually, within the classroom, in the broader community, and in the political sphere.

Previous DeeP Collaborative cohorts have included faculty participants from several AALAC institutions<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aalac.org%2F&data=05%7C02%7CCHAIRSANDDIRECTORS%40listserv1.coloradocollege.edu%7C0eb039f78bf148cd625008dc59a6eab3%7Ccfc7b13c12964387b3085de08fd13c99%7C0%7C0%7C638483822487480616%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=llODlvrGWWYUXHe6ooOSekH6jqeYGD5GM8Xs3uqRh2U%3D&reserved=0>, including Davidson College, Macalester College, Swarthmore College, and Vassar College. The DCI would like to continue and expand its partnership with our AALAC colleagues this coming year.

Approximately twenty faculty members will be selected to participate in the program. The DeeP Collaborative will begin with an in-person workshop in August followed by hybrid cohort meetings throughout the 2024-2025 academic year. With generous support from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, the DCI is able to provide a $2,000 stipend for DeeP Collaborative participants. Review of applications will begin on Monday, April 22 and will continue until all spaces are filled.

The DCI’s mission is to create opportunities for citizens – broadly defined – to engage with one another on contentious topics facing society. To that end, we run multiple programs focused on student learning, faculty development, and community engagement. For more about the DCI, visit us here<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdeliberativecitizenship.org%2F&data=05%7C02%7CCHAIRSANDDIRECTORS%40listserv1.coloradocollege.edu%7C0eb039f78bf148cd625008dc59a6eab3%7Ccfc7b13c12964387b3085de08fd13c99%7C0%7C0%7C638483822487480616%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=LYbgT%2FLfj5%2BUgW5LudtGjzJdhJuS3cuHdfcjSbWz0vE%3D&reserved=0>. The Deliberative Pedagogy (DeeP) Collaborative

Deepening our Discussions, Engaging with Disagreements, and Improving our Teaching

Are you interested in developing new ways to deepen the quality of discussion in your classes? Want to encourage students to engage with one another on contentious topics but don’t know where to start? Then consider applying<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdeliberativecitizenship.org%2Fdeep%2Fapply-today-to-become-a-deep-faculty-fellow%2F&data=05%7C02%7CCHAIRSANDDIRECTORS%40listserv1.coloradocollege.edu%7C0eb039f78bf148cd625008dc59a6eab3%7Ccfc7b13c12964387b3085de08fd13c99%7C0%7C0%7C638483822487636328%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=dMk2CN1e6kM54TYSfDyPw9%2Fbjn%2BrGm3djV7ap%2FYarE0%3D&reserved=0> to become a Faculty Fellow of the DCI’s Deliberative Pedagogy (DeeP) Collaborative, which assists professors in embedding more deliberation about challenging issues into their courses. Through the generosity of the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, the DCI is able to provide a stipend of $2000 for participants in the Collaborative. Review of applications will begin on Monday, April 22 and will continue until all spaces are filled.

Over the past three years, more than 40 faculty members from nearly 20 different colleges and universities have participated in the DCI’s Deliberative Pedagogy (DeeP) Collaborative. These faculty spend the academic year learning about and discussing deliberative pedagogy theory and techniques, embedding them into their own course plans and syllabi, and then actually teaching courses that are infused with deliberation in a multitude of ways. They have come from public and private institutions including Swarthmore College, UNC Charlotte, Morehouse College, and Alamance Community College and a wide range of social science, humanities, and natural science disciplines.

Check out the comments from some of the Collaborative’s former fellows below:

  * Rachel Pang (Religious Studies, Davidson College): “One of the best things about participating in the DeeP Collaborative was the chance to engage with a group of experienced and creative pedagogues at Davidson and other [higher education] institutions.”

  * Luis Gonzalez-Barrios (World Languages and Cultures, Spelman College): “The planning process of the course was very interesting, since it not only made me think about the new DeeP materials, but also about the way of organizing the sessions, the periodization of the modules, and of course the forms of evaluation. I mean, it made me rethink my entire pedagogical approach...Experiential learning and democratic deliberation seem to me necessary pedagogical approaches in times of constant “noise” and polarization.”

  * Anthony Kuchera (Physics, Davidson College): “By participating in the readings, trainings, and interactions with faculty in the Collaborative, I found a significantly better way to approach discussions on difficult topics in the classroom.”

  * Emily Sydnor (Political Science, Southwestern University): “Overall, I found the deliberative discussions and affiliated assignments achieved my course goals and were interesting and engaging for both me and the students. In their reflections on deliberation, several participants commented that in spite of their initial anxiety about talking politics with their peers, they had found the discussions to be a positive experience.”

  * Caleb Stroup (Economics, Davidson College): “Overall, I think students benefited greatly from structured deliberation aimed at developing their abilities to reach collective agreement about competing values embedded in scientific research conclusions.”

Applications to join the Collaborative are welcome from any faculty members who wish to enhance their ability to embed more deliberation about questions and issues involving important disagreements in their classes. More on the background, goals, and expectations of the Collaborative is provided in the attached invitation and on the DCI’s website<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdeliberativecitizenship.org%2Fdeep%2Fapply-today-to-become-a-deep-faculty-fellow%2F&data=05%7C02%7CCHAIRSANDDIRECTORS%40listserv1.coloradocollege.edu%7C0eb039f78bf148cd625008dc59a6eab3%7Ccfc7b13c12964387b3085de08fd13c99%7C0%7C0%7C638483822487792577%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=XAdv%2Bc5NwM7fUC45kh4SeO8f5XIPlnNGUPAupKniY4k%3D&reserved=0>, including how to apply.

This year’s cohort will again include faculty from Davidson and other institutions of higher education – if you know someone who might be interested, please share this information with them because all faculty are welcome to apply! If you have any questions about the Collaborative, please reach out to the DCI’s Faculty Director, Graham Bullock ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>), or any of the Collaborative’s current or former faculty fellows.
